Webmasters monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to a website to see which sections or pages of their site are popular and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed more by people in a particular country.

There are many ways to monitor or track this traffic and then the data gathered is used to help structure websites, highlight security problems or indicate a potential lack of bandwidth. Keep in mind, not all web traffic is welcome.

Websites also strive to increase their web traffic through search engine submission, search engine optimization and various marketing methods, such as email and affiliate marketing.
