Email marketing is a version of direct marketing via electronic mail (e-mail); used to communicate promotions, advertise products or services, acquire new customers, recruit attendance for seminars and training, enhance brand recognition and customer loyalty, and to reach other marketing goals.

While email marketing is a method of promoting a brand or product via the medium of email contact with prospective or current customers. The prominence of email spam in today's web (some studies estimate the percentage of email that is spam to be as high as 90%) has led to the rise of the idea that more targeted "permission-based" marketing be in place, rather than mass mailing.

Email is a very powerful marketing tool. In spite of spammers abusing the medium, email can still be used and is still valued by users for timely, rich and enticing information and advertisements.
